Japanese Bobtail is an ancient breed, which originally
lived in many regions of the Far East. It was introduced
to Japan from China more than a thousand years ago. For
centuries the Bobtails were in Japan the pets of
nobility. In the 17th century they were allowed to
general public, and since than it is known in Japan as
the Family Cat (Kazoku Neko). To the west the Bobtails
were introduced at the end of the World War II.
Japanese Bobtail is a
short-haired cat with a lean, muscular body and slender
legs. The unique tail is a stump 5-10 cm (2-4 inches)
long, tightly curved on itself and with restricted
movement. The hair covering of the tail is thick and
fluffy, giving it a pompom-like quality. The delicate
head is slightly pointed, with slanted eyes. Resembles
Manx Cat, but the two breeds genetically quite distinct.
It is said to be
friendly, loyal, intelligent, affectionate, playful,
outgoing, lively and inquisitive.
Japanese Bobtail Longhair Cat is a long-haired version
of the Japanese Bobtail.
