Chows are an ancient breed which originated in China. There are statues of Chows which are over 2000 years old, but Chows were not just a subject for artwork. They were used for guarding, hunting, pulling sleds and fur coats and food, unfortunately.

 Today's Chow has evolved from these roots so it is truly a multi-purpose breed. The Chow's popularity rises and drops. Today it is ranked in the 30's among AKC breeds. About nine years ago, the Chow reached an all time high of number 6 in popularity. Our dog Tiger ( pictured left ) was invited to visit the Regis Philbin Show in 1988 where the top 10 breeds were showcased.

When a breed is popular, people who don't understand how to properly raise and breed dogs will get involved in "for profit" breeding and produce sub-standard specimens which give the breed a bad name. Breeders have come a long way in the past years to "build" a Chow with a stable temperament and massive yet compact structure required by the "Breed Standard", blueprint for the perfect Chow. Chows in the early part of this century were much lighter in bone, had longer legs and a narrower muzzle. These characteristics are carried forward in the "pet type" Chow of today as the definitive, unusual traits which make a Chow "a Chow" are easily lost if not actively preserved and promoted.
